In 1925 Norfolk Virginia Postal Credit Union was formed to help its members achieve their financial goals. It was the first established credit union in Hampton Roads. A credit union is a member owned not-for-profit financial institution that provides members with the opportunity to save money, receive loans with reasonable rates, and experience a level of service different from other financial institutions. Credit unions serve groups with a common feature, such as employee groups, geographical communities or religious backgrounds.

They operate under the philosophy "not for profit, not for charity, but for service" and work with other credit unions in a spirit of cooperation instead of competition. Through their collaborative relationships, credit unions are able to serve their members most effectively and strengthen the movement by working together through local, state, regional, national and international structures.

Today 80 years later, the Norfolk Virginia Postal CU is still committed to providing the financial needs of each of its members. NVPCU is the second oldest active state charted CU in the state of VA and the oldest state chartered Credit Union in Hampton Roads. NVPCU is dedicated to implementing financial programs, services and activities and events to enhance the financial well-being of its members and continue the legacy of the CU.
